Manual Setup for "XP Points" — Learning vs Automating
April 8, 2026
Should I let AI set up the infrastructure, or learn it hands-on?
What happened
Amanda had the option to let Claude Code automate the entire Firebase/GitHub/Vercel setup. Instead, she chose to walk through each step manually — creating the Firebase project in the console, uploading to GitHub via browser, deploying through Vercel's dashboard.
Why she did it
"XP points." She wanted to understand what she was building on. Firebase, GitHub, and Vercel are now tools she's used hands-on, not tools an AI set up for her behind the scenes.
The lesson
AI delegation has a learning cost. Automating everything is faster but leaves you dependent. The implementation specialist needs to understand the infrastructure well enough to troubleshoot it, explain it, and teach it. There's a time to delegate and a time to do it yourself for the education. Automate the repetitive (Claude Code builds the app), learn the foundational (set up the infrastructure by hand). Organizations rushing to "AI-enable everything" skip the understanding phase — the person who set up the system manually can debug it when it breaks.
One implementation insight every other Tuesday.
What actually works when you ship AI in real organizations. Nothing you could get from a press release.
